We developed the conceptual design for this Christian contemplative and meditation chapel for a private client in the Texas Hill Country.
We designed the chapel as a glass enclosure without any structure within the space. This provides a sense of simplicity and purity that encourages a meditative environment and allows for a seamless spiritual connection to nature. A simple roof structure – supported by slender steel columns outside of the chapel – reflect the wooded area and maximize views from the interior.
This chapel for a private client offers a serene space for a meditative experience connected to the natural environment.
The altar serves as the traditional focal point of the chapel, and a crucifix is formed by the voids in the connection between the large limestone masses on each side behind the altar. These glass-enclosed voids allow light to illuminate the floor with the shape of the cross.
The site is in a heavily wooded area filled with oaks, mesquites, cacti, and other indigenous plants. We placed the chapel to disturb this site as little as possible, rooting the structure to the place and allowing worshippers to experience the tranquility of the natural environment.
